INTRODUCTION

From a sociological standpoint, the Internet is not a virtual world. It is not any more virtual than the telephone, postal service, telegraph, or face-to-face interaction. Unlike all of the above, however, it is an exponentially more powerful communication medium, while also being the most anonymity-friendly of them all. The key is communication - once malicious, it can vary from bullying or mild sexual harassment to serious criminal acts. These can vary widely, but here are some examples:

  • Brainwashing can affect young teens and kids (e.g.: radical extremists, pseudo-religious cults, sex trade syndicates).

  • Rape can affect all genders and all ages (yes, online – no direct physical contact).

  • Blackmail is more easily done than ever (and can lead to a variety of outcomes).

  • Scams seem conceptually simple, but millions still suffer from them (e.g.: financial loss, identity theft).

Such malicious acts can be categorized in many different ways. What unifies them all is what made them possible: the power of the Internet.
